If you are a parent, ditto this – traveling with kids in tow can be...tiring, for lack of a better word. Not that it is not a fun thing to do once in a while but vacationing with kids require a lot more planning compared to if you intend to travel with grownups. Friends and family members do not cry for no reason (for example, sleep depravity or hunger are good reason), throw a tantrum when it is too cold or go crazy in a zoo by running off without letting you know.
Transportation problem solved – Traveling with more than five kids in tow is a harrowing experience so if the chance presents itself, use bus rental. And with transportation problems solved and well out of the way, your focus can be on other stuff like diapers, food, milk, titbits and toys to keep the kids occupied. Moving around is usually the biggest problem for group travels with kids, so solve that and focus on other things.
Don't stress and go with the flow – Wear your sense of humor like an armor. A solid armor against the possibility of ruining the entire vacation just because everyone's sweating the small stuff. Yes, something is bound to go wrong, whether you use bus rental or decide to drive yourself around, but usually the things that don't go 'according to plan' is not worth the stress. Think of alternative and distract the kids if they are getting restless.
Planning helps – Don't you envy those who can go places without needing to plan? They don't know where they are going to spend the night, pops into the first restaurant they see without worrying about hygiene and whether they have baby chairs. Well, backpacking is not for kids although we have heard of some people doing it with bus rental and it went OK. Generally speaking, planning ahead of time really helps keep things under control.
Distract distract distract – While you may be OK with wrestling with large crowds, queuing up in a long line before getting a table at a highly-recommended restaurant or for a admission ticket to an amusement park, kids are a whole different story. So, play smart. Get yourself a large bag and place crayons, paper, toys, games and other things that you can distract the kids with. A U-haul works wonders. Just remember to take it off the bus if you are using bus rental.
Get a headstart – Nothing stresses people out more than running late for something so, the smart thing to do is to get a headstart. Get up early, plan early, be ahead of time. If you are a parent, you are familiar with your kids' nap time...organize the trips around it and if there is a usual snack time, don't expect the kids to be all cheery and happy if they are not given the usual snack...on time. Do it on the bus if there isn't a right time and place to do it.
Last but not least, pick your battles, don't sweat the small stuff and go with the flow. Sometimes, being zen during trips like these is the only sane way to travel with kids.
